Pickering: Watch the Perseid Meteor Showers with the Pickering Naturalists

Each year in August, the earth passes through debris left by comet Swift-Tuttle, causing a meteor shower. As the tiny particles streak through our planet's upper atmosphere, they leave trails of hot gas. From the ground, the trails show up as "shooting stars." We can expect to see as many as 60 an hour. Saturn and Mercury will be low in the west at sunset. We'll also see plenty of stars and constellations; some nebulae, star clusters and artificial satellites; and even a galaxy. The Town of Whitby, in partnership with Whitby Hydro, has pledged its support to the province-wide Count Me In! Community Challenge. The Challenge is taking place between now and August 14, the anniversary of the North American Blackout in 2003. As part of this event, the Town will be hosting a special display and stargazing event with the Durham Region Astronomical Association on August 14 from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Before August 14, pledge your support at www.countmeinontario.ca to participate in the Count Me In! Community Challenge. On August 14, show your support by reducing your electricity use between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm and then join the Town of Whitby and the Durham Region Astronomical Association for our stargazing party at the Heydenshore Pavilion!
