Endangered Species Act Workshop - Toronto

40 Orchard Boulevard, Toronto ON (Northern District Library) (map)

Ontario’s Endangered Species Act: Out of Balance The Save Ontario’s Species (SOS) Coalition needs your help. Though we hailed Ontario’s Endangered Species Act (ESA) as a gold standard in species protection when it was passed, alarming potential loopholes have come to light. Without the broad support of the public, endangered species in Ontario may not receive the protection they need. Help us protect Ontario’s species and conserve biodiversity in the province! Meetings will be held in Toronto, Ottawa and Guelph. The two hour meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. will bring together groups and individuals to learn more about potential problems in the ESA’s implementation; and detail what you can do to help! At the conclusion of the meeting, light refreshments will be served. All in attendance will be entered into a draw to win a stunning copy of The Breeding Bird Atlas of Ontario. Toronto: Raising environmental consciousness, an evening with Devamrita Swami

569 Spadina Ave, Toronto ON (UofT Multifaith centre) (map)

Climate change is with us. A decade ago it was conjecture, now the future is unfolding before our eyes. Canada's Inuit see it in the disappearing Arctic ice, the shantytown dwellers of Latin America and Southern Asia see it in lethal storms and floods and Europeans see it in the disappearing glaciers, forest fires and fatal heat waves. These changes reveal that the world has not been as warm as it is now for more than a millennium. Now, more than ever, Mother Earth needs us to tread as lightly on her as possible. But, how do we change the deeply embedded lifestyles and habits? Let the eternal vedic wisdom reveal the timeless art of genuine sustainable living. Aided by the ancient technology of sacred sound, changing hearts becomes a tangible possibility. And with a sacred heart, comes sacred action - the clarion call of our times. Our Speaker, Devamrita Swami, a traveling monk uses the ancient yoga knowledge of the east to present a practical alternative for the modern man. He is a Yale graduate, an author and researcher who has been instrumental in raising environment awareness around the world through his workshops. So come along and mingle with like minded people in a quest to truly nurture Eco-desire.There will be the most delicious vegan feast awaiting you. Cost: Free for Students For more information: http://www.urbanedgeyoga.com/index.php?d=inSpirit2009&p=earthAlert

Toronto: Living on Earth as if We Want to Stay, with Mike Nickerson

215 Spadina Ave., Toronto ON (Centre for Social Innovation) (map)

If personal security is threatened by an economic crisis with undertones of climate and energy issues, what does it all mean for the children and grandchildren? While humans are a gifted creature, finding our way out of the present situation requires that we acknowledge how the world has changed. As Einstein aptly stated: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." For forty years, Mike Nickerson has been studying the problems and solutions of our times. His study, from outside of institutional molds, reveals how societies change. In his book, Nickerson explores the implications of attempting perpetual growth on our finite planet. He also outlines ways in which we can adapt to what he calls the maturation of the human species. "There is a time for growing and there is a time for mature responsibility," he says. "The human family is at the threshold of a new era and we are feeling adolescent angst as we pine for the carefree growth of childhood." In the same ways that life doesn't end with individual maturity, there are vast opportunities awaiting a post-growth society. To come of age as a society, however, we have to deal with the "growth hormone" that makes the economy ill when it is not expanding. The first step is to choose between the goal of long-term well-being and that of perpetual expansion. It is a Question of Direction. Come, join us for a presentation and discussion about how we could recreate mutual provision (the economy) in a way that can provide for countless generations to come.
