Speaker: Climate Change

'Climate change is what happens while we are busy making other plans!': Dr. Ellie Farahani presents Global climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, and air quality have been arguably the three most chilling hot topics in scientific, political, and economical discussions across the world within the past two decades and continue to occupy our minds as we go about daily lives. Changes in stratospheric ozone affect climate and these climate changes then in turn affect ozone. Understanding the interconnections between ozone depletion and climate change is crucial for projections of future ozone abundances and ultra violet radiation at the surface of Earth. This presentation will highlight our current knowledge of global climate change and stratospheric ozone and the role each will play on the global scene in the 21st century. UofT Workshop: Corporate Reporting: Climate Change & Related Environmental Disclosures

234 Bay Street, Toronto (Design Exchange) (map)

DescriptionInvestors want information on the ability of companies to manage climate change. A growing number of investor collaborative initiatives are using climate change and related environmental information to make better informed decisions, hence increasing attention of regulators on corporate disclosure of these issues. Key questions on data and timeliness however remain. What information do investors require, and when? Where and how should it be included in corporate financial reports? How do companies manage data quality to ensure that it has the same rigor as financial data? This University of Toronto, Environmental Finance workshop session will explore these and other questions surrounding improved climate change and related environmental disclosure in annual reports. The session will address reporting guidance, MD&A guidance from CICA, and the 2008 OSC Staff Notice 51-716 Cost: $150 For more information:http://www.environment.utoronto.ca/Events/CorporateRptWS.aspx

7 Hart House Circle (Hart House - East Common Room) (map)

DescriptionSpeaking: Dr. LILIAN PINTEA, Director of Conservation Science, Jane Goodall Institute BRIEF BIO: Lilian Pintea brings 15 years of experience in applying satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the job of conserving chimpanzees and their vanishing habitats in Africa.Clearing of forests and woodlands for timber, firewood/charcoal, agriculture and settlements are leaving chimpanzees all over Africa in isolated, small populations that face edge effects, genetic isolation, and ultimately extinction. Because most of the wild chimpanzees are located in remote, difficult to access areas, satellite images and GIS are often the only sources of information on chimpanzee distribution, habitat status and threats. Dr. Pintea is using the latest geospatial technologies to map forests and predict potential distribution of chimpanzees in western Tanzania, monitor forest change around Gombe National Park and support participatory village land-use plans to benefit both chimpanzees and people.
