Refurbished Technology Reuse Event
280 Jane St., Toronto ON (map)
This event is a result of several years of perfecting an in-house refurbishing program that breathes new life into gently used corporate equipment. The environmental cost of purchasing a new computer is quite high (est. 300 kg of fossil fuel equivalent, 20 kg of chemicals and 1500 liters of fresh water). In comparison, a used computer does not consume these resources and comes at a fraction of the cost. Those in need of a replacement system or upgrade to their equipment will be able to purchase everything from brand name desktop computers and printers to video cards at unbelievable prices. A Pentium 4 desktop that comes with a formatted hard drive, Windows XP license, keyboard, and mouse goes for $80. Even the sought after USB printer cables that should come with a newly purchased printer, but never do, can be picked up for a mere $5. For more information:http://www.computation.ca/ |

7 Hart House Circle (Hart House - East Common Room) (map) Speaking: MYRNA SIMPSON, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, Depart. of Physical and Environmetal Sciences, UTSC ABSTRACT: Natural organic matter is ubiquitously found in the environment and plays a critical role in several biogeochemical processes such as the regulation of atmospheric CO2, agricultural sustainability, and the fate and transport of problematic organic chemicals in the environment. Organic matter preserved within the sedimentary record also holds key information about early life on earth, insights into past climates, and the presence of specific organic matter structures is often used in the search for life on other planets. Despite the importance of natural organic matter in several disciplines, the vast majority of organic matter remains “molecularly uncharacterized” (Hedges et al. 2000, Org. Geochem. 31:945-958). The lack of organic matter structural information is mostly due to the complex nature and uniqueness of organic matter but also due to the lack of sophisticated analytical strategies designed specifically for the study of organic matter structure and environmental reactivity. Organic matter is a collection of compounds from various plant, microbial, and anthropogenic sources, all at various stages of oxidation (decomposition) and represents the most naturally occurring complex mixture on earth. Organic geochemists have long used biomarker methods to study the sources, structures, and stage of organic matter oxidation however biomarker methods only extract and measure a small fraction (1-10%) of the total organic matter composition. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), namely solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy, has been used extensively to study organic matter structure but suffers from poor spectral resolution due to organic matter heterogeneity and strong dipolar coupling in solids. This presentation will highlight the development of molecular-level analytical methods for organic matter and demonstrate their utility in studying soil organic matter biogeochemistry with global warming. The use of biomarker methods with conventional (solid-state 13C NMR) and innovative NMR methods in tandem provides an unprecedented insight into the dynamics of organic matter in the environment. Examples from molecular-level changes in soil organic matter composition after in situ soil warming experiments will be shown that enable an accurate, long-term projection to be made about the response of soil organic matter to global warming. Pollution & Poverty in Toronto Neighbourhoods
7 Hart House Circle, Toronto ON (Hart House UofT) (map) People living in poverty in the Great Lakes basin may be experiencing an increased burden of high air pollution from industrial facilities in their neighbourhoods. Seventeen neighbourhoods in Toronto had a poverty rate at or higher than the national average and high releases of combined toxic air pollutants and air contaminants. These are the findings from a recent study by the Canadian Environmental Law Association and Environmental Defence through the groups’ Pollution Watch project. This study mapped air release data of toxic pollutants and air contaminants from the National Pollutant Release Inventory (2005 data) and income data from Statistics Canada (2001 Statistics Canada Census). The goal of this forum is to bring together academics, policy and community members to engage in dialogue about poverty and pollution. The study authors will present major findings with a focus on Toronto neighbourhoods and comparisons to other Great Lakes regions and national averages. Ajax, ON (map) On Saturday, March 28, 2009, between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., 1 billion people will turn off their lights as part of a global vote. Mayor Steve Parish is encouraging Ajax residents to do the same. Mayor Parish will launch the Town’s Earth Hour Awareness Campaign on March 5. The campaign is targeted at residents, schools, and businesses about the need for action on global warming, and what people can do to combat the issue. It’s a call to stand-up and take control over the future of our planet. This year’s Earth Hour event has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. People have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote. Switching off your light is a vote for Earth - leaving them on is a vote for global warming. Last year, the residents of Ajax and Pickering reduced their energy usage by 6.7 per cent. This year’s goal is to increase that number by doing simple things like leaving your car at home, unplugging seldom used appliances, and turning off your lights.
