How to Stop Getting Junk Mail Delivered

Ever wondered how you can stop getting junk mail, flyers, coupons and mail spam in your mailbox? If you're in Canada, you CAN stop some of it being delivered to you.

no junk mail

Did you know that, at least in the USA, junk mail is a big source of carbon?

In the USA:

  • 100 million trees are cut down every year to produce junk mail (Matador)
  • The average person receives nearly 11 pieces of junk mail each week, or 560 pieces a year (Matador)
  • Getting rid of junk mail would offset the carbon from 480,000 cars every year (Matador)
  • In 2005, junk mail surpassed what we call first-class mail as the majority of what the USPS was delivering (BusinessGreen)

To stop getting junkmail delivered by Canada Post, all you need to do is put a note saying that you don't want to receive unaddressed Admail. If you have a community mailbox or a postal box, put the note on the lip of the box, not on the door. This is called the Canada Post Consumers Choice Program.

If your note is ignored, call 1-866-607-6301 to get the mail stopped.

Canada Post, by law, has to deliver mail addressed to you, so you'll still get junk mail that has your address on it. But you should be able to cut down on the pile of unaddressed mail arriving at your door.
