70,000 Tires Buried on Oak Ridges Moraine

The Oak Ridges Moraine supplies drinking water to more than 250,000 people and contains the headwaters of all of the watersheds in Toronto. It is important to our water as it filters rain and snow and releases fresh water that we drink.

According to an article in the Toronto Star, the province allowed 70,000 tires to be buried on a farm on the moraine almost 10 years ago.

The farmer who is at the centre of the controversy is also a member of the Lake Simcoe Water Quality Improvement Program Committee, and has been asked to step down for the time being.

Local residents are concerned that contaminants from the tires may leak into the groundwater.

What Can I Do?

If you are concerned about the quality of your drinking water due to this issue, consider contacting your MPP to let the provincial government know that this is something that should be addressed.
