On Tuesday, the City of Toronto approved a plan to improve the quality of Toronto's beaches. In a 33-3 vote, the city restricted access to dogs on some beaches, and approved spending $1 million to place an underwater curtain off the shore of Sunnyside Beach to keep pollution away from swimmers.
The curtain is intended to keep pollution flowing from Humber river from reaching the swimming area of the beach.
A sheet (rumored to be vinyl) will hang from the surface of the water down to the lakebed, keeping the water from the Humber out of the swimming area. A pump will also be used to make sure that the swimming water doesn't get mixed with the water from the Humber. The city is also planning to replace the sand currently at the beach with clean sand.
Mayor Miller said "This is a cost-effective way of giving swimming to kids in the west end of Toronto, many of whom live in quite poor neighbourhoods,” he said. “We should have as much free activity as we possibly can."
Councillor Gord Perk noted that cleaning up the Humber is considered to be a 100 year project.

why do people just accept this?
the fact that there has been so little comment on this just boggles themind.
City Council has just admitted that there is a HUGE problem with pollution flowing into Lake Ontario from the Humber River and then said not that they are going to clean it up, but that they are going to spend one million dollars to divert it!
this is nuts. let's use the money to begin to address the problem.
