The Region of Durham has released a map of the natural features in the area, complete with woodland, wetland, urban and transportation information. The map was produced by the Durham Region Environmental Advisory Committee (DEAC) with technical assistance from the Regional Planning Department. It is intended that the map will be distributed to "secondary schools, libraries and municipalities across the Region".
The map shows areas in Durham that are:
- Oak Ridges Moraine
- Woodlands
- Wetlands
- Areas of Natural and Scientific Interest
Earth Science - Areas of Natural and Scientific Interest
Life Science - Greenbelt Natural Heritage System
- Greenbelt Boundary
- Watercourse
- Lake / Pond
- Agricultural Areas
- Municipal Boundary
- Urban Areas
- Municipal, Regional, Provincial and Rail transportation
The map also includes some interesting facts, such as 82% of Durham Region lies within the Provincial Greenbelt Area, and that there are 244 km of shoreline in Durham region alone.
The map can help Durham residents identify and appreciate the frequently unnoticed natural features of the region. You can also purchase post sized copies of the map for $10 from the Planning Department.
The map is available in PDF format.
